What we offer
When you book in for a remedial massage, your treatment will be a combination of any modalities or techniques available that you would like or that the practitioner recommends.
If there are specific modalities that you would like to try or that have worked well for your body in the past, feel free to make a specific request when you make the booking or when you arrive for your appointment. Alexandra is a Southern Cross Affiliated Provider, so let us know if you’re using insurance when you book in.
Remedial Massage
Includes any and all available treatment modalities, including:
relaxed muscles are essentially transparent, and after the superficial muscles of the body are relaxed, it allows for deeper penetration to the muscles that often hold tension or are in spasm that would benefit from the compression and lengthening techniques applied in deep tissue massage.
for active people who would benefit from accelerated recovery from training. Sports massage often involves stretching and functional joint mobilisation along with deep tissue, trigger point release, myofascial release and dry needling.
activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (the ‘rest and digest’ branch of the nervous system) is incredibly beneficial for everyone, especially people who experience high levels of stress and anxiety in their day-to-day lives who are often stuck in the sympathetic nervous system (the ‘fight or flight’ branch of the nervous system). Especially beneficial for people experiencing adrenal fatigue, regular migraines, frequent headaches, burnout or overwhelm. When someone falls asleep and starts to snore or their stomach starts making noise during massage it is music to a practitioner’s ears because it is an indication that the parasympathetic nervous system has been activated.
fascia is the connective tissue surrounding and connecting all the structures inside your body including muscle, tendon, ligament, bone and organ. When healthy, fascia acts as a lubricating surface that allows for glide and quick information transmission. When dysfunctional or dehydrated, fascia can act as velcro, creating adhesions that prevent full range of motion and functional muscle activation. This technique is applied with little to no oil or balm and is very slow, aiming to release the adhesions and return mobility and functionality to the restricted areas.
for perfect posture, one needs equally long, equally strong opposing muscles. In society today many people who sit at a desk or in a vehicle for work suffer from common postural dysfunctions that involve the muscles at the front of the body becoming shorter and stronger relative to the muscles at the back of the body. To help correct this, your practitioner will help to manually lengthen the short muscles and recommend exercises to help strengthen the relatively weak muscles. It’s never too late to embark upon a postural correction journey and the results are often surprising, including better quality sleep, more energy, fewer headaches and/or backaches, feeling taller, stronger and more confident.
for women who are pregnant, different stages of pregnancy call for different modalities and your practitioner will recommend these to you based on how far along you are into the pregnancy.
for acute (something that’s just happened) or chronic (something that’s been a problem for more than a month) injury, pain or dysfunction. The practitioner will recommend techniques and modalities that will help alleviate inflammation, improve functionality and range of movement, and/or accelerate the healing process when possible. Sometimes it is not safe or recommended to treat a new/fresh injury, and you should always follow doctors recommendations. Often injury rehabilitation involves “homework” in the form of stretches, exercises, hot/cold therapy and most often gentle movement or REST.
as opposed to “wet needling” (such as an injection through a hollow needle eg. a cortisone injection). Dry needling uses the same needles as acupuncture, but without the Traditional Chinese Medicine energetic theory. The dry needling practiced at GIVE Therapies has three primary objectives: 1) reduce inflammation in the area of acute injury and activate a healing response, 2) interrupt (chronic) pain patterns through the puncture and “resetting” of dysfunctional nerves (neural needling), 3) manually relax active muscles or muscles in spasm that have not responded to lengthening or compression.
ideal muscle function occurs when a muscle turns on automatically when your body needs to use it AND automatically turns off when your body is finished using it. Often the turning on comes more naturally compared to turning off, but you can train your muscles to be more efficient by actively lengthening them through stretching and through reciprocal inhibition or agonist contraction. Different stretching techniques facilitated and taught at GIVE Therapies are isometric (static), Muscle Energy Technique (MET) and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF).
all joints are designed to move through a “normal” range of motion (ROM). The objective of mobilisation is to test the existing ROM and encourage more movement if there are restrictions. Sometimes the soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) can become displaced and through gentle movements can find their home again, so to speak. When joints do not move through their prescribed ROM on a regular basis, they can produce less synovial fluid (joint lubrication) and become stiff or sore. Moving a joint is an effective way to encourage more production of that fluid and leaves the joint feeling buoyant and free.
At GIVE Therapies, what sets us apart is our passion for constant and never-ending improvement through education. As said by Jim Kwik, “when you teach, you get to learn it twice.” Through teaching our clients about the things we’re learning or have learned in the past we empower our clients to take more responsibility for their own healing journey. Our goal is for our clients to feel good all the time and not NEED treatment, but to recognize the value of regular body maintenance and use it as a health and wellness tool.
At GIVE Therapies, we would love to see more massage in the world, and we’re happy to facilitate that!
Please feel free to book in for a 2 hour partner massage (both you and your massage partner attend the appointment for the full two hours) and Alexandra will teach you some effective techniques and a short routine that can be used on each other.
During the two hours you get to take turns giving and receiving the massage as Alexandra demonstrates. Just wear comfortable loose clothing and let us know if you have any specific areas you’d like to learn to work on.
